As I’ve said before, data is precious. Being able to track consumers behaviours, likes, dislikes and with support from us, emotions, means the difference between life and death for brands these days. But while being able to monitor all of this gives us a greater insight into the lives of others and ourselves more than ever before, it also raises serious questions about privacy, ownership and ethics. So serious that recently the European Union decided to extend the scope of its data privacy regulations for organisations such as Whatsapp, Skype and other online messaging services.
Here at Sensum we believe passionately that those organisations accessing consumer data must do so responsibly, particularly in the realms of emotional AI. With technologies allowing us to measure heart rate, electrical activity in the brain, breathing, eye tracking and facial expressions – ethics are everything.
We’re going to be discussing this in more detail at an “Emotion Capture And Trust” workshop in September with The Personal Data & Trust Network, Information Commissioner’s Office and Andrew McStay from Bangor University’s School of Creative Studies and Media.
